Community HousingWorks provides people with stable homes in healthy communities and layers in powerful programs, services, and connections to resources. Our onsite Community Centers and Computer Labs not only provide residents with a safe space to learn and grow, they also provide critical access to resources, knowledge and community support they need to forge stronger futures.

Providing stability to enable mobility

Community HousingWorks aims to proactively prevent homelessness through our communities and resident services. A stable home provides the foundation for a successful future. Layering powerful programs and services on that foundation sets the stage for being able to break the intergenerational cycle of poverty.

The tools Community HousingWorks provides help people attain financial stability, improve their health and overall well-being, and set school-age children up for success in the classroom and beyond. Next Generation Success

Afterschool Program

Incorporates interactive e-learning technology with positive community building. Includes Study Stars for elementary and middle-school children, a teen program, and a summer program

Sue Reynolds Valor Scholarship

Scholarships are awarded annually to residents of any age to pursue post-secondary education or vocational training

Career Pathways

Career exploration and preparation for adolescent and young adult residents of CHW communities via post-secondary education and vocational training

Supportive Housing

CHW provides social and supportive services, access to community resources, and skill-building programs to benefit residents that qualify for set-aside units

Older Adults Program

Provides onsite supportive housing services and activities to promote older adult health and independence, encourage an active lifestyle and community support, and reduce isolation

Resident Leadership Academy

Empowers residents to make positive changes and improve the quality of life in their community

Healthy Food Distribution

Older adults and families have access to ongoing healthy food distributions with support of community partners

Youth Financial Literacy Program

Putting youth and young adults (ages 13-24) on the road to financial independence

Veronica’s story

We were ineligible for shelters because many only had space for recovering drug addicts or alcoholics. Even women’s shelters required a police report of domestic violence within the past 30 days to qualify for services, even for women like me who wanted to escape their situation before our abuse escalated.

When they moved into Community Housing Works Azusa, Clara finally had the safety her family needed with rent she could afford. The gated community offered Clara and her family both security and peace of mind. Her apartment was beautiful and spacious, so her daughters had room to live, play, and grow together in their new home.

Terry’s Story

Terry’s Story

Terry is a gay activist, artist, writer, and 34-year survivor of HIV/AIDS. He came to San Diego 20 years ago to seek medical care at UC San Diego’s Owen Clinic for HIV/AIDS and has lived here ever since. In the fall of 2016, Terry’s landlord told him they were increasing his rent by $100 a month. As a senior relying on Section 8, this rent increase meant that Terry could no longer afford to live in the apartment and neighborhood he had called home for 13 years.

Janet’s Story

Janet’s Story

Janet takes us on a short tour of the Vista Transit Center, she stops to say hello to the bus driver; they’ve become good friends. Janet uses public transportation almost daily, and having it available right across the street from her apartment makes it convenient and helps her save money.

Ron’s Story

Ron’s Story

Ron is a resident of Community HousingWorks’ Alabama Manor senior community in San Diego. Ron became homeless in 1994 after he was robbed at gunpoint and his life savings were stolen from him. Without money, resources, transportation or friends, he was forced to live in shelters. “I remember it was a cold and rainy winter and I was downtown without any money in the pouring rain.
