Have a lasting impact on our residents by volunteering at one of our communities
We offer volunteer opportunities for individuals, families, and businesses at CHW communities in San Diego County and Los Angeles County. Share your passion and skills today. Individual volunteers can help with tutoring, food distribution, and resident events. If your organization is looking for a group volunteer opportunity, our monthly family nights throughout San Diego County are a great way to get involved! Can’t volunteer, but want to give back? We gladly accept in-kind donations that support our programs.
Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities
Study Stars After School Program
- Tutor CHW’s Study Stars program virtually for K-8th grade youth to improve elementary school literacy. Volunteers support homework help, read-alouds, and arts enrichment activities.
- Shifts are generally Monday through Thursday between 3pm to 6pm, with a requirement of 1-3 hours weekly for a minimum of 3 months. We will work with you to create a volunteer schedule that works for you.
Health/Wellness/Event Support Volunteers
- Volunteers support with food distribution and/or resident events such as workshops, family nights, etc.
- Hours vary
One-Time Volunteer Opportunities
- Group- or Organization-Led Family Night
- If your organization is looking for a group volunteer opportunity, our monthly family nights throughout San Diego County are a great way to get involved! Please contact us to sign up.
Can’t Volunteer, But Want to Give Back?
We gladly accept in-kind donations that support our programs. You can host a book drive or donate school supplies, snacks or other items to our Community Centers.

Volunteer Application Process
Thank you for showing interest in volunteering at Community HousingWorks! Below is a short checklist all applicants should complete in order to become a volunteer.
- Step 1: Submit the CHW Volunteer Application
- Under Assignment Preference, please select the location that works best for you and whether you would prefer After School Program or Health & Wellness.
- Once submitted, you will receive an email with next steps which are also listed below.
- Step 2: Submit the Volunteer Onboarding Forms included in the email which include a liability waiver, confidentiality agreement, and safety guidelines.
- Step 3: Background Check - Once steps 1 & 2 are completed, you will receive an email from AssureHire for the background check will take 1-3 business days to complete (cost will be covered by CHW)
- Step 4: Volunteer Orientation Training – a 30-45 minute training must be completed either via Zoom or in-person on your first day.
- Step 5: Clearance - After all 4 steps are completed, you will receive an email from our team stating you are cleared to begin volunteering. Location and logistics information will be provided as well as an introduction to our onsite team overseeing this specific event.
