Priss Roman de Fuentes
Priss lives at North Santa Fe Apartments with her husband and children and is studying English at MiraCosta College. She says that she feels “very fortunate and privileged to live at North Santa Fe,” because of the privacy and safety she and her family have.
When Priss started living at North Santa Fe, she immediately wanted to become more involved in her community. She took a leadership course offered by CHW and serves as a volunteer packing food and vegetable bags for residents. She also helps at the kitchen whenever there is a community event.
In addition to having a stable, affordable home, Priss has also been able to take advantage of programs offered by CHW to support her family’s financial well-being. During the pandemic their family received help paying their rent thanks to the CHW’s Rental Assistance Program. According to Priss, “No sé cómo le hubiera hecho para pagar la renta. CHW nos apoyó y nos esperó y no estamos viviendo abajo del puente.” (“I’m not sure how my family could have been able to afford rent during this time. CHW supported us and waited for us, and that’s why we are not living under a bridge.”)
Living in a CHW apartment home has really propelled Priss and her family towards financial mobility. Both of her sons obtained higher education degrees. Her oldest son now lives in Washington, D.C., working directly with students at a university. Her other son is a Sue Reynolds Valor Scholarship recipient. He graduated from California State University San Marcos and is now working with kids with autism.
Priss said “Desde que empecé a vivir en esta propiedad, mi vida cambio. Estoy muy agradecida.” (“Ever since I arrived to live at this property, my life has changed. I’m very grateful.”) CHW continues to Build Futures.
