Ways To Help

Having a home should not be taken for granted!

Maybe you take for granted having a home where you can sleep or just having a roof over your head in general. Unfortunately, not all people have the capability to purchase a home.

Veronica, a single mom, worked 12 hours a day while caring for her one-year-old son. Despite working 12 hours a day, she still could not afford the rising price of renting a house and eventually became homeless. She applied for several community housing to have at least a stable home, but she was rejected. She went to Vista, Missouri, and San Diego in search of home with her son.

Community HousingWorks (CHW) offered an affordable house for her who was not able to forge a strong future. Veronica has stated that “Living in a Community HousingWorks home brings security and stability not only to parents like me but also to our children who may have never had a home in their lives.”

A stable home led her to a better future. When she had enough money to pay for rent, she was able to spend money on tuition and obtained a double Associate’s Degree from Miramar College. Now she is working towards a double Bachelors in Anthropology and Studio Arts in San Diego State. Living in a CHW home gave her new hope and allowed her to dream bigger. She also stated that “I would not have been able to continue to build on my dreams of a better future and know that someday, I will be able to buy our own dream home.”

CHW, founded in 1988, owns over 3,600 apartments in 42 communities and is serving more than 9,000 working families, children and seniors. We do not just offer affordable houses. To give our residents fundamental help, we have a wide variety of programs such as financial education, scholarship. Through these efforts, we have been recognized nationally and have received three national American Institute of Architects Awards and two national Fannie Mae Maxwell Awards.
