When Rowan first came to the learning center, she spoke only Arabic and was acclimating to a new country, new culture, new school and new community. She worked hard in CHW’s Running Readers program and has made incredible strides in her reading!
The 20-year old resident of San Diego’s Las Serenas Apartments seems to spend every waking moment working to improve her life or the lives of those around her. From volunteering in her learning center to being the first in her family to work toward a college degree, Lupita is chasing her dreams.
Just months ago, Kalib was reading at a below-basic level. After just a few months, his behavior and reading test scores have improved significantly.
Maria’s humble beginnings taught her that she alone controlled her future and she didn’t have to be beholden to anybody. As a three-time CHW VALOR Scholarship recipient and Outstanding Graduate at SDSU, Maria has worked her way to being a CHW board member.
