A truly sustainable community is not just a “green” building but includes the human infrastructure and practices for a continued healthy community. During the development of SOLARA in 2006, Community HousingWorks anticipated the need to provide guidance for empowering residents. Working with a team of education consultants, Community HousingWorks developed a best practices and training resource: 360° Green Curriculum.
First used in the Learning Center of SOLARA in 2007, the Green Curriculum was rolled out to all the Learning Centers staffed by Community Building staff in CHW’s affordable housing communities. It is a living document that offers information (in English-Spanish) on the concepts of energy and water conservation, recycling, healthy indoor materials and organic foods. Besides information, the Green Curriculum includes activities and art projects that are age appropriate for children and families.
