Success Stories

Griselda Huerta

“One always aspires to have something of their own…to have their own home.”

Griselda Huerta thought that her dream of homeownership was “out of her hands.” As a single mom struggling to make ends meet, it seemed impossible to save enough money to buy a home. However, Community HousingWorks (CHW) worked with Griselda to turn her dream into reality.

Griselda and her family lived at Turnagain apartments, a CHW affordable rental community in Fallbrook, for over twelve years.  It was the place where her children grew up and did their homework in the Learning Center.  It was the place where her family experienced the blessing of a strong community in the midst of hardships.  It was the place where Griselda took advantage of the learning opportunities available and discovered that her dream was a possibility.

After taking the Financial Fitness class, Griselda was inspired to begin working toward her goal of homeownership.  She used the knowledge and tools from the class to begin saving toward her goal.  Soon after, she took the Homebuyer Class and pre-purchase counseling.  She then signed up for an Individual Development Account, which allowed her to receive a match for her savings toward her home.

Griselda’s wish is that other individuals would see her story and know that the goal of homeownership is within reach.  She says: “I hope that my story inspires other people to participate in Community HousingWorks’ programs…yes you can do it, you can save to buy your home.”
