VALOR Scholarships

Each year, CHW awards the VALOR scholarship to Volunteers and Junior Leaders who have achieved academic success and who have demonstrated community leadership, an opportunity and reward to help pay for higher education.  VALOR Scholarships can be used for education-related expenses, including tuition and fees, room and board, transportation, books, and school supplies.  Applications are reviewed and evaluated by a committee comprised of staff and volunteers and all selections made by the committee are final. VALOR Scholar Stories:

Karen Sanchez - Karen came to San Diego from Tijuana 5 years ago with her family hoping for a better future.  Her dedication to her education and determination has fueled her desire to achieve her dream of becoming a pediatrician.  Karen has been a Junior Leader at Las Serenas and has worked with programs like the Young Worker Leadership Academy, Thinking Green, and CHANGE (Creating Hope Among New Generations of Excellence).  Volunteering within her community helped her grow as a person and have the opportunity to work towards her goals. As one of Karen’s teachers says, “Karen does not take opportunities lightly and will accomplish all her goals when given the chance.”

Mahmoud Kanj – Mahmoud has been an active volunteer at Hillside Village for over a year; working with kids in the homework club and helping them succeed in school.  He is attending San Diego Miramar College and planning to major in electrical engineering.  His VALOR scholarship will help enable Mahmoud to purchase books and supplies for his classes – a much needed cost to cover as tuition fees are increasing.  Mahmoud has been praised for his dedication to helping the students of Hillside Village, while still in college and maintaining excellent grades.

Danielle Taylor - In addition to working full-time and going to school, Dani has been volunteering with the youth at the Poway Villas Learning Center, as well as at the California Center for the Arts.  At Poway Villas she has devoted time to helping set up for community parties, taking children on field trips, and helping with outdoor activities.  Dani is an extremely hard worker and highly focused on her goals.  She plans to attend Palomar College and continue her academic success.
